Gone Too Soon: Tan Shyn Lyn

Saw on my facebook homepage that ivy joined the group 'gone too soon: tan shyn lyn' and curiosity got the better of me. so i clicked on the group and went to take a look.
the info there did not put away all my curiosity and i was still wondering what had happened. all my friends in spore were in the midst of exam, so i did not want to disturb them.

at buffet at bondi beach on sunday, heard from minwei that there was a msian girl from selangor who was studying in NUS (Spore) who committed suicide. she was in her final year and was going to graduate from dentistry within months. immediately, my thoughts linked this to the facebook group. there must be some correlation.

came back and did some research or rather web-surfing/browsing. more info surfaced and i drew all them together to explain certain situations and made my deductions which were later confirmed.

A fellow ASEAN scholar, even though she was a few years more senior than I was and I have not met her before, it is sad to know that such a bright, talented girl had taken her own life. I share her brother's sentiments that I am glad and proud that she had the courage to seek medical help for her depression in a society where seeking mental help can be stigmatised and laughed upon.

There is no proper explanation of why she has taken her own life and I do not attempt to make speculations. Rather, i think this tragedy sheds lights on how important support is for teenagers and young adults alike, especially those who are on a foreign land on their own. No matter how many years a person could have been living independently away from home, the hollow and lonely feeling still surface from time to time. There is no reason to assume that necessary and adequate care and support can be regarded as of less importance.

Hopefully, it is also a reminder to all of us to make that little effort to understand and listen to people around us, be it our friends, family members, relatives or just anyone who does not look like his or her usual self. There is so much that i would want to write, but i have no idea how to put them into words. this is a very sad tragedy, which probably could have been prevented.

I hope that shyn lyn's demise could be a wake up call for us to reflect on what could have been done and what should not have been done so that we can all prevent such tragedies from happening again.
